French-born German pianist (1895-1956), renowned for his subtle touch, pedaling, and dynamic control -particularly in the music of Debussy and Ravel.
Autograph note in French signed by him, dated 1953, plus a specimen of dried mountain flowers applied with tape on an album sheet, with a note in the hand of Lyda Fournier “Promenade en Engadin 1951”.
The French-born pianist was the son of a German doctor and lepidopterist, and himself had a collection of butterflies and moths. In this letter, which sounds as a dedication, Gieseking inscribes some tender words for the Fournier’s family : “...Je regrette d’être incapable de mentir (dans ce cas particulier, au moins) puisque c’est vraiment un très grand plaisir de rencontrer les chers amis Fournier – …”. From the “Album amicorum of Lyda Fournier, wife of the cellist Pierre (1906-1986).
